Airport
Funchal is the airport that serves Madeira and is connected to most major European destinations. From the UK, there are regular flights from Birmingham, Gatwick, Manchester and Bristol.
Car Hire
A car is essential to enjoy Madeira. There are several major car rental agencies located at the airport. A Google search will find you the best deal. The Via Rapido, the main route that connects the island East to West is very easy to travel on. When you go exploring, most of the roads are hilly. For Guests accustomed to bigger, city roads, it may be more practical to hire a smaller car with a good engine size. eg 1500cc. This makes exploring, and town parking easier.
Insurance - Excess indemity waiver. Although insurance is included, it excludes an excess waiver (approx £2500). ie you still pay the first £2500 of any damages. The Hire Desk staff WILL try to "upsell" this to you but it will cost an extra 8 - 12 euros per day ! You can refuse this, or before you go arrange an Indemnity policy to protect this excess, at a much cheaper rate.

Size of Vehicle - when the Desk Staff know they can't upsell the Indemnity waiver, the other sales trick to be aware of is an upsell to a more pwerful car than the one you booked. "Will your car be powerful enough to get up all these hills ...." etc. A Renault 1.2 or 1.5 litre car will do very nicely. On a personal note, we do NOT recommend H**tz /Th***ty / B***et car hire. They are operated from the same desk, and we have found the sales staff to be particularly aggressive sellers, deliberately delaying customers until they agree to an upsell. Forewarned one can research accordingly.
If you book in advance online, beware if the price seems particularly cheap. The Rental Company may pretend to be offering a car eg in the Medium size category, but which really should be in a lower category. The car provided will be of a less well known brand, and lack the refinements, and often pulling power, and should really be priced in the next category down.
All the Hire companies will advertise "or similar" so do not be surprosed if you do not get the model car you were expecting, but you will get simlar engine and capacity.
Funchal to ARCO
From Funchal Airport to Arco da Calheta is approx 40 minutes on the Via Rapide.

An airport meet and greet service is available, subject to extra charge. This can be arranged locally if you require.
Funchal to FAJA
From Funchal Airport to Faja da Ovelha is approx 45 minutes on the Via Rapide.
